Jason Street seeks answers in quest to walk again
About a year into Jason’s recovery from the hit that left him paralyzed, Jason began seeking medical advice in hopes it would lead to him once again, walking. He just could not accept the fact that he would never be able to walk again. The past year had seen more changes than anyone at his age should ever have to endure.
In that year, Jason had been left paralyzed, seen the whole town alienate him and his family because they filed a lawsuit against his head coach, Eric Taylor. In a small town such as Dillon, you dare not to disgrace the beloved high school football team in such a manner. Jason had also broken up with his longtime girlfriend, Lyla. Well, actually, Lyla broke things off with Jason when she personally caught him sharing a kiss with Suzy.
Tell me what I want to hear, doc!
A frustrated Jason set out on his mission to walk again. In a visit with a specialist, Jason revealed the encouraging news that he was beginning to regain use of his right hand and this was a huge sign that he was going to walk again. However, Jason’s excitement was quickly squashed when the specialist explained that without a major medical breakthrough, he would never walk again.
Before leaving the medical facility, a dejected Jason ran into a fellow member of the quad rugby team. He explained that there was an experimental stem cell procedure happening in Mexico. There was hope that a particular doctor could help Jason walk again. After all, the study was producing lab rats regaining the use of their hind legs!
An excited Jason went back to the quad rugby facility where he found Herc and was explaining his findings. Herc warned Jason that this was a scam and that people would exploit him. Herc encouraged Jason to give up his pipedream of ever walking.
I’m gonna walk in Mexico
Jason was having none of the people trying to reason with him. A more determined man than ever, Jason and his once again, best friend, Tim, set out on a trip to Mexico. Tim, not yet aware of the dangers of such a procedure, had his mind on the opportunity to party in Mexico.
Jason and Tim arrived in Mexico only to find that the doctor was out of the office for the next week on a family vacation. An irate Jason went back to the hotel and was hell-bent on laying on his bed for the next week until he could consult with the doctor.
Tim was having none of this. And after a couple of days of lying around, Tim physically picked up Jason and placed him in his wheelchair. The two were going to take Jason’s bag of money that he had received from the lawsuit and “make some memories”, as Tim called it.
It did not take long in their quest to make memories before Tim was arrested for offering a local policeman a bribe. As you can see, this trip isn’t going exactly as Jason had intended. Keeping Tim out of trouble is always a full-time task.
Hey doc, tell me you will make me walk
It was finally time for Jason to meet the doctor. The doctor examines Jason and explains that he plans to inject Jason with embryos from a shark. This does not sit well with Tim when the doctor states that doctors in the United States are a bunch of cry babies and rather follow guidelines than actually help people.
In a state of desperation, Tim contacts Lyla by phone and pleads for her to make a trip to Mexico to help intervene. Lyla reluctantly made her way to Mexico to help with the situation. Upon her arrival, Jason was not pleased to see her. But it was not long before the three began getting along. But that was soon replaced with dismay when she felt that Tim was not serious in the two talking Jason out of having this very risky surgery.
Lyla was just about to go back to Texas when Tim stopped her by telling her that he booked a booze cruise so that the three could discuss Jason’s plans of proceeding with surgery. Lyla felt that a booze cruise was a terrible idea, but she agreed to stay and give it a try.
Booze cruise to chat up Jason Street
The three set out on this cruise and Lyla and Tim immediately began telling Jason what a bad idea this was. Lyla used religion to try and talk sense into Jason. However, Jason was having none of this, stating that he and God weren’t exactly friends since him being paralyzed.
Tim then took his shot. He gave Jason the hard facts. And that he gets it. But you will never walk again. Facts! Tim then told Jason that he refuses to go back to Dillon and tell Jason’s parents that he let him do this. Also telling Jason he loved him too much to let him go through with this surgery. All three knew there was a good chance of Jason dying on the operating table.
Harsh reality smacks Jason Street in the face
Tim and Lyla left to the driver’s cabin and allow Jason time to think about what he had just been told. However, what the two had never invisioned was about to happen. Tim walked back out onto the deck to check on the status of Jason. Man overboard!
Jason, in what appeared to be a suicide mission, had thrown himself overboard and into the deep and choppy waters of the Gulf of Mexico. What was going through Jason’s mind in order for him to pull such a stunt? He must have felt that the two people he thought he could count on more than anyone in the world had also turned against him. What he didn’t understand at the time was that these two were actually the ones who cared the most and wanted him to come to his senses.
The frantic search for Jason began. Tim and Lyla feared the worst as the cruise boat turned around in a desperate attempt to find Jason. The two found Jason a little while later washed ashore. Somehow Jason was able to maneuver his lifeless legs through the rough shore and swam back ashore, using only his arms.
You can only imagine how relieved Tim and Lyla are to find Jason alive and well. Even more relieved as they listened as Jason told them that he was just being stupid and that he had decided not to go through with the surgery.
